The Door Post

This post has been a long time coming. Originally it was going to be an entire series of posts (remember when I used to post more than 5 items a month? Good times), going into an inane amount of detail, and featuring case studies on every single aspect of the featured subject.

It is about doors.

You might be thinking that I couldn't possibly be dull enough to fill post upon post with doors. The idea was going to be to examine what is arguably the most common object in everyday human interaction and go into why it is, pardon my French, fucked up so often. I would start with looking at each component (primarily the handle, but any windows play an important part in interaction) and show how they are usually done so badly as to make the primary task of opening a door more difficult for people.

It was to be an opus on how, by paying attention to the task at hand and examining small details, to best design an object. But all you really need to know is this:

Excluding life threatening situations, door design is the single most common bit of bad design. Remember: handles mean pull, panels mean push. Never change this. For large values of never.

Ever have to design a door? Now you know how. Ever need to design a car, pen, website or anything, bear the above lesson in mind.

MCU: Accessible Web Design Tip: How to make printable characters between adjacent links invisible.
Some older screen readers are unable to distinguish between adjacent links if there is no printable character between them. The W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 provides a priority 3 checkpoint to deal with this unfortunate behaviour of older screen readers:10.5 Until user agents (including assistive technologies) render adjacent links distinctly, include non-link, printable characters (surrounded by spaces) between adjacent links. The obvious place on a page where you can find several adjacent links to is on a horizontal navigation bar at the top or bottom of a web page. Website Testing: Conquering Cross-browser, Cross-platform Woes
As I was doing final cross-browser testing for a redesign of SKDesigns, my website design business, the design implementation was working quite well in nearly every mainstream browser for Windows, Mac, Linux, and even the Lynx text-only browser. Unfortunately, though, I found problems with three old or little used browsers, such as Internet Explorer 5.2 for Mac that destroyed the CSS-positioned layout. I toiled over how to best handle these browser bugs, especially since my upcoming Web design book -- currently in production at my publisher -- stresses the importance of usability, readability, and degrading gracefully for older browsers. Open New Windows for PDF and other Non-Web Documents is Jakob Nielsen's latest Alertbox article, dated August 29, 2005. Although he'd previously stated not to force links to open new windows, he now feels that you should indeed set links to open in new windows for PDF and other non-Web documents. Even after reading this new article, I still feel strongly about considering the website's target audience, letting the user choose, and avoiding accessibility problems. I think I'm gonna like Movable Type. This is the christening post and my fingers are crossed (and so are my toes).

If you're a current subscriber to the jenett.radio feed, you won't have to change anything. A symlink is in place and your news reader or aggregator should automatically pick up the latest feed. Subscribing to the new feed or the old feed will net the same result.

However, the various category feeds will no longer be updated (this will be the last post that will appear in the old category feeds). New links to the current category pages can be found in the top right corner of the new main page. All new posts (except for the dailywebthing) will be included in the new jenett.radio single feed. Favicon Plugin for Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro
Looking around for a Photoshop plugin to create several favorites/shortcut/bookmark icons as favicon.ico files, I found a great plugin that works beautifully, and it's even free: Free Photoshop ICO Format plugin via telegraphics.com.au. They state that it works with all versions of Photoshop, including CS and CS2, and that it also works with Paint Shop Pro. Actually, you'll find quite a few interesting plugins there for Windows and Mac. A navigation menu is - if we are speaking structurally - a list; but it is rare to find a developer/designer who marks them up as such. Important changes to the BASE element for IE 7

Looks like my post went live over on the IETB regarding changes we made to the BASE element in IE 7. Previously the BASE element had some issues, primarily by design, that made certain actions within the guts of IE very easy to do, but polluted the exposed object model and overall tree hiearchy.
