Here's a post that echoes some thoughts I've been having lately. I'm actually scheduling myself and Boyink.com as a client after my current projects are complete so have been kicking around ideas for the next version of the site and my related marketing materials.I know I want my site and brand to be more fun, fresh, have more 'bounce' -- essentially have more 'Boyink'...but I've been getting stuck on what exactly that translates to in a design. So let me throw this out there for any past/current customers or readers of this blog -- what's the Boyink Interactive brand to you, and how should the site change to reflect that brand?

Where Visual Design Meets Usability: Part 1
Posting on Functioning Form has been light this week, as I’ve been recovering from a recent illness. Luckily, the great folks at User Interface Engineering (UIE) have posted some of my thoughts on the overlaps between visual design and usability from a recent interview with UIE’s Joshua Porter:

Where Visual Design Meets Usability - An Interview with Luke Wroblewski, Part 1
'Recently, UIE’s Joshua Porter managed to get a little of Luke’s time to answer some questions about the role of design, which we’re publishing in two parts.'

Thanks to Josh for the great questions and to the whole UIE team for inviting me to speak at their User Interface 11 conference this October. In my session, I’ll be diving into how visual design enables appropriate and effective communication with customers, end-users, internal stakeholders, and more.

Design Comes in Threes
Though the word design gets used to describe lots of things (visual stylings, system architectures, interactivity, etc.), I’ve always considered it to be three things:
  1. A profession
  2. A problem-solving methodology
  3. Communication
In particular, a lot of recent articles on Functioning Form have focused on the third point –design is communication- especially as it relates to the strategic value of design.
  1. It’s Simple. Design Communicates.
  2. Iterative Holistic Communication
  3. Defining the Problem
So naturally I found it interesting that when was asked to define design in one sentence each of the panelists in Good Design vs. Great Design emphasized communication:
  1. Cameron Moll: Design is about communication but cannot exist without a medium of some sort.
  2. Veerle Pieters: Design is away of communicating emotions. It expresses feelings so its design.
  3. Jon Hicks: Debate how ugly design or no design wins it misses the point that design is about communication.
Also of note was Cameron Moll’s comment that “the feedback I've been privy to seems to indicate the developers enjoyed [the panel], while the designers felt it was a bit too Graphic Design 101.”

On a related (only by threes) note, BJ Fogg pinged me about updating a link to his book on User Experience Comes in Threes. Which made me recall a few Venn diagrams I’ve encountered since the original post.

First up is Diego Rodriguez’s considerations for a great user experience from Design 2.0 in San Francisco:
  1. Desirability (human factors)
  2. Viability (business factors)
  3. Feasibility (technical factors)
Next is Dirk Knemeyer’s anatomy of a product from the Future of Digital Product Design (PDF):
  1. Business
  2. Technology
  3. People
Lastly, to tie it all back to design as communication is my list of three things an interface design should communicate to customers/users:
  1. By addressing the question “What is this?” we communicate usefulness.
  2. By addressing “How do I use it?” we communicate usability.
  3. By addressing “Why should I care?” we communicate desirability.

All Business Owners Should Know these 10 Things Before Building a Website

10 things all business owners should know before they have a website built.

I loved the article "10 things businesses should know before building a website" over at 456 Berea Street . Here are their top 10 with my comments added:

  1. Understand what you want. Too many businesses really don't know what they want from their website . Have you researched who your online customers are? Do you know what keywords they search for? Do you know what sites they visit? Do you know why they are looking for your site? If you don't, they you don't know what you want. You want happy customers. That's what you want (and hopefully more income as a result).
  2. It costs more and takes longer than you think. I can't count the number of times I've been asked how long a website takes, but every time they are shocked at the average development time. However, nearly every time we have "wait time" with a website, it has been caused by the clients' inaction (not sending in copy, not sending pictures, not signing off on part of the project, etc.) You can eliminate most of the wait time by having content, pictures, etc. ready for your developer to dump into the design.
  3. A web site has several pieces; don't cut corners. You should keep in mind the following aspects: Design - Does it look and act like my client expects?, Content - Does the site provide the information my clients are looking for?, SEO - Will clients be able to find my site once we make it live?, Future Additions - Have I adequately planned ahead so that I don't have to waste time interfacing the new features with existing ones.
  4. Balance glitz and guts. A good website mainly provides the information that people are looking for and does it in a pleasing way, but content wins out every time .
  5. If you build it, they won't necessarily come. If you don't have a unique value proposition you will not get any sales except from nice old Grandma Elna who bought something just to be nice. Something about your business must attract the more savvy online customers of today.
  6. Avoid bit decay; the site needs maintenance. Technology is ever changing and hopefully your business is keeping up. You need a plan to update, maintain, and improve your website on a monthly, if not weekly basis. Ask yourself, "How is my target audience changing, and how can I quickly adapt to their needs?"
  7. Treat the web team as professionals. You and the designer both have specific roles you must fill for your website to succeed.
  8. Most people in the web industry are clueless. Just because your daughter's friend's brother built a website when he was in 4th grade, that does not qualify him as a web designer. Just because your daughter's friend's brother is a graphic designer, that does not qualify him as a web designer. Just because your daughter's friend's brother owns a pirated version of Frontpage, that does not qualify him as a web designer.
  9. You get what you pay for. I think we covered your daughter's friend's brother well enough above.
  10. Don't start your project by buying a CMS. A content management system is not the way to start. Ask your web designer, they probably have a better and more customized answer for your needs.
Now these are not an "all inclusive" list by any means. However, these will help you start off on the right foot. If I were to add a #11 to the list it would be Have your site built with the customer in mind. If people can't find your site because of poor SEO, or if people can't use your site because or poor navigation, or if you don't provide information that people want, your site will fail. Fail to understand your customers and you might was well give your website money away to charity where it would do some good.

Designed For A Change Article Published

During the development of a software product we all make numerous design decisions. Some decisions are done in early stages of development, while analyzing the requirements and gathering the overall architecture of the product. Other design decisions are done during the lower-level design. Finally, even during the implementation of the a single component, we are often in position to weight several design options against each other.

In the following discussion we will examine one of the common design aspects, which is the source of numerous design dilemmas: should we design the product such that it will be ready for a future change (in the requirements, in technology etc.), or should we settle for a straight forward implementation? When is our product “sufficiently-designed” and when is it “over-designed”? In other words, how can we find the golden path when it comes to designing a software system to be ready for future changes?

So you Wanna be a Design Strategist? (Part 3)
In part three of our So you Wanna be a Design Strategist? series, Bryan Zmijewski rounds off the eleven skills of a Design Strategist. Be sure to check out part two of the series first.
8. Bottom Up Strategy
Designers are in a unique position to control a company's vision through a visual--they're probably the only people who are consistently expected to show up with colorful items at staff meetings. Take advantage of your visual aids--use a ‘hands on approach’ to get people rallying behind ideas. Designers tend to be ‘doers’ rather than 'dwellers', so use your vision to change the course of business planning by implementing ideas. Waiting on management to decide on a direction can have a negative impact on momentum of a project. Take some risks.

Now, if that doesn't sound good, you could always try to justify your ideas the same way the folks in accounting do--with reams of spreadsheets. But when is the last time you saw people get excited about a spreadsheet? For every 10 people, most organizations already have 9 workers doing paper jobs. Break up status quo.

9. Know that you will fail, and how to do it
Good design stimulates emotion, inspires participation and gets people engaged. But not every design that you create will succeed--sometimes a design will do none of the above, and will fall absolutely, unequivocally flat on its face. And that's okay! Build failure into your design process- you shouldn't even try if you want to completely avoid failing, and nothing tried is always nothing gained. A great designer will push boundaries and learn from mistakes. Some of the stuff that you do will stink. Learn how to use that to your advantage to make your projects more successful.

10. Be a salesman
Things happen for a reason. Oracle didn’t become a powerhouse because they had “great design”-- design just didn’t get in the way. If you want to influence people in the room you need sales skills. Half of getting your idea implemented has nothing to do with a computer, wireframes, research or sketches. It’s because people like you. And if they don’t like you, then they've at least got to respect you…you’ve got to have some proven ‘game’.

People want to support other successful people and ideas. It’s contagious. And while I’m not suggesting you throw yourself at business associates looking for a best friend, I am suggesting that you be confident in yourself and personality. There's no need to be fake. Just put genuine effort into solving problems for your customers, whether they're your internal customers or the ones who buy your products.

11. Fight when you have to; know when you shouldn't settle for a watered down compromise
My final suggestion for the aspiring Design Strategist is less about design or strategy- it’s about winning. You’ve got to want to influence people, make a difference and convince people to believe in you. You’ve got to throw yourself into the ring.

Business is brutal. Capitalism drives us to be more successful- and that’s a good thing. It pushes us to make decisions. Don’t let a conference room intimidate your business sensibilities. Design requires putting on boxing gloves. The beauty of design is that you can always use the emotional side to calm and inspire after a difficult interaction with your “financial” nemesis.

And that's it. Being a design strategist isn't the easiest job. When you're sitting in your third client meeting of the day (you know, the one that begins at 4PM and promises to go right through dinner?) trying to 'enlighten' the client as to why they shouldn't use their favorite 'stacked rocks' image on the home page--those days of sitting in the cubicle, pushing pixels while your iTunes is blaring in your ears--may seem real attractive. But take heart in this--the world is a more attractive place because you marry business and design on a daily basis. And for that, we thank you.

Website Credibility in 10 Easy Steps

Credibility is difficult to build and extremely easy to lose. These 10 steps will help you maintain your credibility.

Stanford released the following 10 points for increasing credibility after a 3-year, 4,500 person study .

  1. Make it easy to verify the accuracy of the information on your site. - The web makes it extremely easy to link to other sites that back up your material. No need to create a 3 page bibliography. Simply link to the material inline. Those that want additional information will be able to review your information and see that you have done your homework on the subject.
  2. Show that there's a real organization behind your site. - Web sites make it easy for smaller companies to look just as big (or bigger) than larger organizations. While this can be both good and bad for either group, showing that your company has more of a presence than a P.O box will help increase your credibility.
  3. Highlight the expertise in your organization and in the content and services you provide. - Besides stating your "qualifications", it is always better to show off your expertise by writing articles that clearly shows your understanding and your authority on the subject.
  4. Show that honest and trustworthy people stand behind your site. If you provide a simple bio of the people in the organization, you can highlight your expertise and show that your people can be trusted. Testimonials are a great way to help build credibility.
  5. Make it easy to contact you. - This is one of the three essential purposes of a website . Show your contact info on every single page.
  6. Design your site so it looks professional (or is appropriate for your purpose). - Your website should look like your business. Templates will never do that for your business. Make sure that your design is built around your customers and can communicate directly with their needs.
  7. Make your site easy to use -- and useful. - Make sure you use good navigation and make it simple for people to "progress" through your website to the information they are searching for.
  8. Update your site's content often (at least show it's been reviewed recently). - Whether you are using a CMS or have a company blog, make sure that you are providing up-to-date, pertinent, information that will answer your customers current questions. Your industry isn't stagnant. Your website shouldn't be either.
  9. Use restraint with any promotional content (e.g., ads, offers). - Your customers didn't come to your site to see advertisements. They came looking for specific information. Make sure people can clearly tell what are ads and what aren't.
  10. Avoid errors of all types, no matter how small they seem. - No one loses credibility faster than those that have broken links, bad grammar, or pages that don't display correctly. Take a second to review your site.

These are simple concepts. However, making them a part of your everyday operations is more difficult, but the benefit will be well worth the effort.

From an implementation perspective the focus was on developing a site with a low cost of entry, so rather than implement at content management system the small site is hand-coded and static. For a design we 'mashed up' a couple of pre-existing templates available on the internet. I will admit - this is one time where I knew immediately what background image the site would have and the rest of the design was figured out after that...;)The icons are from http://www.famfamfam.com, and hosting is provided by pMachineHosting. Please welcome another Boyink to the web!

Speculation - Why Did Microsoft Design Zune So Protected WM Doesn't Play?
Below I've talked about the what, now for the why. Microsoft's J Allard can do a lot of hand-waving about Plays For Sure and Zune being two complementary solutions. Or perhaps you think that Microsoft is trying to run competitors out of the market and take Apple head-on with a similar integrated, vertical DRMed platform; perhaps they want the sort of anti-competitive power people ascribe to Apple's iPod-iTunes tie; perhaps Microsoft was tired of its Plays For Sure licensees failing to attract many customers and wanted to take the wheel. Or maybe some mix of those.

But let me throw one more possible rationale out there: because Microsoft's 'Plays For Sure' WM DRM does not accomodate the Zune sharing feature (and that's just my speculation), they ditched it. In other words, WM DRM failed to accomodate new, emerging, and potentially unforeseen lawful uses. The end result is that Microsoft decided to force customers to rebuy their preexisting WM DRMed collections in order to make use of Zune's novel features.

Microsoft wants Zune to be just like iPod-iTunes.  They want customers to know exactly where to go to buy music, what software to use to manage their collection, and what the device will do. It's a fully integrated platform.  Having customers buy Napster 2.0 music, load it onto the Zune, and then find out that the Zune would play but not wirelessly stream it would have been a disaster. It's exactly the frustration they're trying to avoid.

And that's to say nothing of the fact that many users were already having a lot of problems with WM DRM.  Janus DRM licenses would expire randomly and it wouldn't sync with devices right for many users.  By starting fresh with Zune, they also avoid that frustration.

However, just like Apple, Microsoft is discounting the frustration of people who want to use an alternative music vendor. Those customers who have bought PlaysForSure WMA files will certainly be confused when their Microsoft player is incompatible. Microsoft is also discounting that many customers will simply opt out of thelicensed services altogether, because they can't trust their investmentin DRMed media. At the same time, it's betting that the integrated platform will be worthwhile given the fact that most people's collections are MP3s anyway.  Most people don't own a lot of PlaysForSure files, and, just like with the iPod and iTunes, most Zune songs won't come from the Zune Marketplace.

I still think this won't be a winning business strategy, at least not in the short run; it's not going to turn people away from the iPod (not this incarnation).  But, so long as they're using DRM at all, one can make the argument that it's a better business strategy for Microsoft than Plays for Sure. Both may be losing strategies, but Zune might be less of a loser.

Regardless, I think these DRMed services under the DMCA are a raw deal for users. These are the sorts of bizarre business decisions made in the DMCA+DRM world. But for the DMCA, this wouldn't even be an issue.

Official Description:
In today’s social, distributed, search-driven Web, customers are finding their way to Web content through an increasing number of distinct experiences. Yet when people arrive at most Web pages, the experience they get isn’t optimized for this context. Instead, the vast majority of content pages online remain more concerned with their own context than the context of their users: where did a user arrive from and where are they likely to go next? These pages remain designed as if they were primarily accessed from a Web site’s home page or a carefully thought-out selection from the site’s information architecture.

To address these issues and more, this talk outlines a set of best practices for Web content page design that focuses on appropriate presentations of content, context, and calls to action. Specifically: how can content be optimized to meet user expectations as they arrive from a diverse number of access points; what is the minimum amount of context required to frame content appropriately; how can the most relevant calls to action be presented to maximize user engagement? Applying these considerations enables information architects to deliver content experiences that take full advantage of emerging opportunities online and the existing assets within their Web sites.
